"The teachers thoroughly enjoyed his presentation." Coverdale Christian School) "I highly recommend James for the upper primary and secondary levels." Yvonne Barrett, Librarian, AISS I love being a writer, and I love talking about being a writer. Not only do I get to travel to new and exciting places, but while I'm there, I meet heaps of new people, which means that new stories are growing in my head all the time. As a presenter, I see my role as having two parts - to educate, and to demystify the author's role. I also like to make the audience laugh, because I believe that more "gets in" when humour and information are used in combination. Some of the different presentations I offer are listed below. author talks - These are always fun and full of laughs. I talk about my own journey as a writer, describe how stories begin, talk about the writing process, and answer questions. workshops - These can be anything from a 45 minute "How do we get started?" session to a week-long residency. I've run workshops for kids from as young as 10 years old to adult and PD sessions. A more detailed breakdown of a sample workshop can be found by clicking here. staff PD - In these sessions, I offer my views on how I approach issues such as encouraging reluctant readers, boys and literacy, and my own approaches to a variety of reading audiences. A walkthrough of a workshop is also popular. awards presentations and addresses - A "real-life" author can be just the thing to really boost enthusiasm in keen young writers and readers. mentorships - These are usually private one-on-one arrangements where I work with a writer on a particular project, usually aiming towards preparing a manuscript for submission. For more information on manuscript assessment, click here. writers' camps - What? Your school doesn't run a camp specifically for your enthusiastic writers? Then you should -- they're great! And you need an experienced resident writer, like me! Whatever kind of presentation you require, you can be sure that it will always be carefully tailored to meet the needs of the audience, be they primary schoolers, HSC students or adults. To discuss your particular needs simply email me, or to organise a visit, go to the bookings page. "We loved the visit to our school!" "He was entertaining and kept me and my friends laughing... The stories about his early life were fantastic and interesting." "i think he was so funny and interesting." "Keep up the good work and put us on the list of characters(if you want)." "Great! His stories were very funny." |
